Geoengineering and Carbon Management : Is There a Meaningful Distinction ?

چکیده

INTRODUCTION A broad and expanding suite of responses to the CO2-climate problem have been proposed ranging from energy conservation to the construction of space-based sunshields that could counter some of the effect of increasing CO2. Proposed measures vary widely along many dimensions including their technological feasibility and their distribution of costs, benefit and risks. Here I focus on assessment of industrial carbon management (ICM), defined as the linked processes of capturing the carbon content of fossil fuels while generating carbon-free energy products such as electricity and hydrogen and sequestering the resulting CO2. Put simply, I address the question: Is ICM an advanced emissions control technology or is it geoengineering?

GEOENGINEERING THE CLIMATE : History and Prospect 1

■ Abstract Geoengineering is the intentional large-scale manipulation of the environment, particularly manipulation that is intended to reduce undesired anthropogenic climate change. The post-war rise of climate and weather modification and the history of U.S. assessments of the CO2-climate problem is reviewed. Proposals to engineer the climate are shown to be an integral element of this histor...

Can carbon cycle geoengineering be a useful complement to ambitious climate mitigation ?

Intentional climate modification at a global scale – geoengineering – would probably be very risky, and perhaps even dangerous. Many negative consequences of geoengineering have already been predicted [1,2], and it is very likely that there will be unforeseen environmental consequences that may only emerge after geoengineering is enacted [3]. Indeed, I have argued previously that the net impact...

Transient climate-carbon simulations of planetary geoengineering.

Geoengineering (the intentional modification of Earth's climate) has been proposed as a means of reducing CO2-induced climate warming while greenhouse gas emissions continue. Most proposals involve managing incoming solar radiation such that future greenhouse gas forcing is counteracted by reduced solar forcing. In this study, we assess the transient climate response to geoengineering under a b...

Some whats, whys and worries of geoengineering

In this paper I discuss the nature of geoengineering, some of its attractions, and some reasons for concern. I claim that there is confusion in the use of the term ‘geoengineering’ that is related to larger concerns about the language in which responses to climate change are discussed. I conclude that despite some reasonable grounds for suspicion, research in areas that involve carbon dioxide r...

Assessing the direct occupational and public health impacts of solar radiation management with stratospheric aerosols

Geoengineering is the deliberate large-scale manipulation of environmental processes that affects the Earth's climate, in an attempt to counteract the effects of climate change. Injecting sulfate aerosol precursors and designed nanoparticles into the stratosphere to (i.e., solar radiation management [SRM]), has been suggested as one approach to geoengineering. Although much is being done to unr...
